Jesus’ Self-Image & Paul’s

[* * *]

Examples of Jesus’ Self-Image

Luke 11:31 The Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and will condemn them: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, one greater than Solomon is here.

John 13:13 You call me, ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You say so correctly, for so I am.

John 15:20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his lord.’

Mark 14:61-62  . . .But he stayed quiet, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” Jesus said, “I am. You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of the sky.”

John 6:35  . . . I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

John 10:14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and I’m known by my own.

Examples of Paul’s Self-Image

Galatians 2:11 But when Peter came to Antioch, I resisted him to his face, because he stood condemned.

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

1 Corinthians 9:15 But I have used none of these things, and I don’t write these things that it may be done so in my case; for I would rather die, than that anyone should make my boasting void.

2 Corinthians 1:12 For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

2 Corinthians 10:8 For though I should boast somewhat abundantly concerning our authority, (which the Lord gave for building you up, and not for casting you down) I will not be disappointed.

2 Corinthians 11:9-12,22-23 When I was present with you and was in need, I wasn’t a burden on anyone . . . As the truth of Christ is in me, no one will stop me from this boasting in the regions of Achaia. Why? Because I don’t love you? God knows. But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them that desire an occasion, that in which they boast, they may be found even as we. . . . Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the offspring of Abraham? So am I. Are they servants of Christ? (I speak as one beside himself) I am more so; in labors more abundantly, in prisons more abundantly, in stripes above measure, in deaths often. . . .

2 Corinthians 13:2-3 . . . I write to those who have sinned before now, and to all the rest, that, if I come again, I will not spare; seeing that you seek a proof of Christ who speaks in me. . . .
