Alternative Interpretation

Some scholars see James 4:5 as referring not to the human spirit but to the Spirit of God strongly yearning for us to resist greed and worldly desires. Either interpretation leads to the conclusion that “resist the devil” refers primarily to resisting the devil’s temptation to try using prayer to pander human greed.
