It is common for abuse survivors – and other deeply hurting people – to cut themselves. Some eating disorders are also a response to deep hurt. Other forms of self-abuse might seem bizarre even to those who do it. I’ll provide some real-life examples.

A dear friend of mine would sometimes try to strangle himself or beat himself or tell himself he is bad or cover himself with bodily filth or eat his own excrement. Eventually, through flashbacks, he discovered that this is how he was treated as a baby.

Until healed by God, one woman used to stick thumbtacks in her nipples. As an infant her abuser had attached electrodes to her nipples. She is now cured of delaying urinating until doubled over in pain. As a little girl she had been pressed while being molested and accidentally wet her abuser’s bed. She was severely punished for that.

A close friend of mine would masturbate while fantasizing of distressing or sadistic things. Though less exactly, this also corresponded with elements of her past abuse.
