Swearing to One’s Hurt

Psalms 15:1-4 Lord, who shall dwell in your sanctuary? Who shall live on your holy hill? He . . . who keeps an oath even when it hurts

Joshua 9:19-20 But all the princes said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. Now therefore we may not touch them. We will do this to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them.”

Judges 11:30-31,35 Jephthah vowed a vow to the Lord, and said, “If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand, then it shall be, that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.” . . . When he saw her, he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to the Lord, and I can’t go back.”

Numbers 30:2 When a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

Deuteronomy 23:21-23 When you vow a vow to the Lord your God, you shall not be slack to pay it; for the Lord your God will surely require it of you; and it would be sin in you. But if you refrain from making a vow, it shall be no sin in you. You shall observe and do that which has gone out of your lips. Whatever you have vowed to the Lord your God as a freewill offering, which you have promised with your mouth, you must do.

Proverbs 18:7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are a snare to his soul.

Proverbs 20:25It is a snare to a man to make a rash dedication, then later to consider his vows.

Ecclesiastes 5:4-6When you vow a vow to God, don’t defer to pay it; for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay that which you vow. It is better that you should not vow, than that you should vow and not pay. Don’t allow your mouth to lead you into sin. Don’t protest before the messenger that this was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice, and destroy the work of your hands?
